10 Tips for Preventing Head Lice

October 10, 2018

Avoid head-to-head contact at school, in gym, on the playground, while doing sports, at home, at sleepovers, etc.

Pull back hair with a rubber band.

Braid if long.

Avoid bedding, pillows, and carpets that have been used by someone with lice within the past 24 hours as lice can live for approximately 24 hours off a head. Although less than 2% of head lice cases come from the environment, it is wise to exercise common sense.

Use a good lice comb, such as the Terminator™, at least once a week for 2-5 minutes while hair is damp.

Wash hair with a mint-based shampoo 1-2 times a week.

Use mint spray daily. A peppermint-scented spray has a 92-95% success rate in repelling lice.

Bring your own pillows to sleepovers.

Check all members of your household for lice once a week.

Tell everyone you had contact with that your family had lice, and ask them to check their heads.
